13th Year Transitional Program
We offer a “thirteenth year” program to meet the continuing needs of young adults in the community who are not yet ready for independent adulthood. The program is individualized, and has several possible components, depending on the needs of the person.
Students can enroll in the Academy and take classes that are relevant to their future plans, independent of the need for credits. Often students taking this option concentrate on the fine and performing arts classes, and may take an extra math or lifeskills class as well. This option may be modified so that students can attend classes at the Academy part time and enroll at Washtenaw Community College part time as well. The Academy has had a long and productive working relationship with WCC, especially with Learning Support Services. This offers students a relatively seamless transition to college life, at their own pace.
Students who are already enrolled in college classes, training programs, or are in the work environment
may still struggle with basic organizational and communication skills. Starting in 2007, the Academy will offer an evening drop-in tutoring and support program for these young adults. By subscribing to the services offered, students will pay a monthly fee and be able to utilize the tutoring and coaching services at their convenience. The tutoring is based on increasing reading and writing efficacy, as well as bolstering organizational skills.
