Increasing Organizational Skills
One of the biggest challenges that comes with attentional disorders is a profound lack of personal organization. Students at the Academy are taught to use planners to organize assignments, and planner use is monitored closely for those students who need it. Students do not have lockers or desks, but rather open cubbies, which allows the faculty to address the organizational needs of a child with a messy personal space. Large projects are broken down into smaller parts, so that students do not become overwhelmed and so that they learn through repetition how to break tasks down themselves. Time on task in each class each day is recorded by the teacher, allowing the student to receive feedback at the end of each week as to how much of their class time they used wisely. Teachers work with students to devise methods of getting and remaining organized, so that each child develops an awareness of their organizational needs and how to address them.
